Privacy Policy for The Altimeter

Effective Date: November 24, 2025 (Updated for v1.14)

1. Introduction

Welcome to The Altimeter. We value your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use our mobile application.

2. Information We Collect

a. Location Data

Our app requires access to your device's location (GPS) to provide core functionality, specifically to calculate and display your current altitude, speed, coordinates, and navigation bearings. When you choose to record an expedition or trek, location data is recorded via a foreground service with a visible persistent notification to log your elevation profile and breadcrumb route. This data is processed and stored strictly on your device and is never transmitted to external servers.

b. Sensor Data & Severe Storm Watch

We use your device's onboard barometer, rotation vector, and accelerometer sensors to compute barometric altitude, vertical speed (vario), true north heading, and atmospheric pressure trends. When you enable the optional Severe Storm Watch feature, the app monitors sea-level reduced barometric pressure locally via a foreground service to detect rapid pressure drops preceding severe mountain storms. All sensor telemetry is processed strictly on your device.

c. Local Storage, Waypoints & Trek Logbook

When you record hikes or pin navigational waypoints (e.g. Camp, Trailhead, Water, Summit), your route coordinates, breadcrumb tracks, and elevation history are stored locally in an on-device database excluded from cloud backups. You have full control to view, navigate towards, export to GPX 1.1, or permanently delete any recorded trek or waypoint at any time. No tracking data is ever transmitted to external servers.

d. Camera & Summit Photos

When using the Summit Cam feature to capture or import photos for altitude watermarking, camera images and stamped watermark graphics are generated and saved directly to your local device gallery or storage. No images are uploaded to any external server.

e. Advertising Data

We use Google AdMob to display advertisements. AdMob may collect and use your device's Advertising ID and other usage data to show personalized or non-personalized ads. For more information, please refer to Google's Privacy Policy.

3. How We Use Your Information

4. Data Sharing

We do not share your personal location, photos, or sensor data with third parties. Advertising data is processed by Google AdMob as described above.

5. Your Rights & Data Retention

You can revoke location or notification permissions at any time through your Android device settings. You can also opt-out of personalized advertising through your device's Google settings. All recorded treks and pinned waypoints can be cleared or deleted directly inside the app.
